Jill Amidon Strickland

Jill starting singing harmony (& wearing jeans) in small-town Iowa. From a musical family, she was expected to play piano, play instruments that would fit into her bike basket, sing in the church choir & harmonize around the piano at all holidays & parties. She sang in her first opera chorus directed by Joseph Flummerfelt at DePauw University. In Boston, she sang with the Master Singers before moving to Greensboro in 1981 for graduate school. Since then, she has sung in choruses under David Pegg & Bill Carroll (Greensboro Choral Society), and the Greensboro Opera Chorus under Richard Cox and David Holley. She served 2 terms on the Bel Canto Board of Directors, and played flute & piccolo with the Greensboro Concert Band and the Greensboro Flute Choir under Nancy Thurston & Deborah Egekvist. Professionally, she earned a PhD in textiles & apparel and served on the faculty at the University of New Hampshire & UNCG. Before retiring, she worked for 15 years in denim manufacturing at Cone Mills where she was manager of statistical quality control, and vendor certification. She continues to sing her heart out (& wear jeans) at First Presbyterian Church under Robert Wells and is thrilled to be part of GCV, singing under Bill Young and next to & harmonizing with Bel Canto professionals!
