Flirt with the nature of love at a concert full of charm, humor & beautiful singing.
Flirt with the nature of love at a concert full of charm, humor, and beautiful singing.
“Is love a feeling or a fancy?” asks Marianne, played by Kate Winslet in 1995’s Ang Lee adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Sense and Sensibility. So too does this concert inquire as to the true nature of love.
The repertoire for this concert, by turns both whimsical and serious, may never fully answer the question. However, we think the many, many songwriters and composers who have poured their hearts into their work would at least agree that love is a fickle, frustrating, maddening, and joyous thing, including:
- A flirtations and humorous arrangement of Bésame Mucho by Consuelo Veláquez
- Leonard Bernstein’s Make Our Garden Grow from Candide
- Marianna by Phillip Wilby, a warm and richly melancholy British folk arrangement
- La Rose Complète, Morten Lauridsen’s setting of the Rilke poem exemplifying his impossibly lush harmonic style
- And many more sincere, ironic, passionate, and whimsical selections in classical, contemporary, musical theater, and pop styles
