In a collaborative concert, Bel Canto Company and Providence Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir showcase the breadth of Black influence on choral music. The performances will feature works by Black composers and poets in a wide variety of genres. This collaboration is not only one of music but of spirit, sharing through music-making the heritage of Black musicians and poets who have made deep and lasting contributions to the American choral arts.
The concert’s title is borrowed from William Averitt’s composition The Deepness of Blue, based on five poems by Langston Hughes: “New Moon,” “My Loves,” “To F.S.”, “Drum,” and “Danse Africaine.” Other works planned for this concert include “Tambourines to Glory” by Undine Smith Moore, “Song for Snow” by Florence B. Price, “Psalm 91: My Soul Hath Found Refuge in Thee” by Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, “St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy and arranged by Hall Johnson and more. Read more…
